Suspicious but not careful
Just got home from a very interesting meeting with a very interesting friend.
Seriously - I AM BUT STUNNED from what i have heard!
A little about my friend - this is my ex- senior in the first law firm I worked for in Dubai. He is Syrian, 32, not very happily married, extremely professional. I truly respect him and he is one of the only three people I trust in this city. Plus he is one of the people I know for the longest time here - it's been almost 3 years that we know each other. We don't see each other often, because both are terribly busy - especially him, being a Head of Legal for one of the developers here. His name is Ahmed. Very interesting character I should say. A rebel, a fighter and a really good person. A lawyer by birth. We are very much alike that's how come we have developed a real friendship.
Now I have a new Russian client who bought property from the developer Ahmed works for and he ( the client) wants me to help him save his investment. Now consider the fact that Ahmed has never lost even one case for years. He IS a real shark.
A little market overview: at this point the entire Dubai is stuck with their real estate investments and/or can not carry on with the payments/would like to postpone the payments and avoid the consequences of failing to proceed with payments in timely manner prescribed by the new real estate regulations in Dubai * just to let you know - those are not exactly in favor of the investors - but good lawyers know their ways around it hehe* /would like to take out their money/transfer their payments into other projects/consolidate payments for several units towards just one unit and so on. So basically I have loads of crap to clean after my clients who prefer to consult a lawyer AFTER they get into trouble, not BEFORE. Im not gonna get too professional here - Im fed up of watching each word and of proper drafting at the day time so pardon me for not caring for my style here.
So going back to my friend. I had a formal meeting with Ahmed today at his office and then we decided to meet for a dinner and a chat as we didnt see each other for about 6 months. We met at 7 pm in one of the restaurants at the Kempinski- Mall of the Emirates. After finalizing the work matters we started talking personal stuff. What he told me shoked me to the core. He said I am treating people with too much suspicion and this aparently is very obvious, however YET he would not necessarily call this "carefu" as apparently I offend people unconciously with my lack of trust. He is right though - I am by nature very cautious. Or maybe not by nature but by experience. I do have problems trusting people.
Could it be that I actually push people ( and by "people" I mean a very specific person) away with my own stupidity? Or could it be that by trying to act smart I actually acted stupid? I can't deny - I am definitely guilty of NOT trusting him ( well.. i did trust him and wanted to trust him but at the same time i was trying to be careful and smart). Oh well, tough luck! You screw up the most when you are trying not to screw up the most! Too bad because the guy literally is a materialized Mr. Everything I Ever Wanted In A Man. I didn't believe this was possible! Glorified be my Lord, the Almighty!
Time to repeat Istikhara.
