Open your books on the page 198, please. The modal verb ‘to be to’ performs three main functions: plans and arrangements, orders and instructions and notices. Let’s look at the examples in the book and read them.

Now look at this picture

Frank is a sportsman and he is preparing for the competition. His coach gives him instructions.

Very good! Now let’s fill his orders using the verb ‘to be to’. You have 3 minutes for this task!

Let’s do ex.26. It’s necessary to divide the sentences into 3 groups: a) to be = a planned or arranged action; b) to be = an order; c) to be = a notice or an instruction.

Well, the next exercise. You are to paraphrase the following sentences so that to use the modal verb ‘to be to’.

E.g. 1) The lecture is supposed to begin at eight.

The lecture is to begin at eight.

2) I expect her to come and help.

She is to come and help.

3) It was planned that we should wait for them at the door.

We were to wait for them at the door…

Now we move on to the next modal verb ‘need’. Как модальный глагол он может использоваться только в одном случае, когда нет необходимости кого-либо сделать что-либо. Let’s look at the examples from your books.

Now let’s do ex.28, p.200.

You are to read the sentences and say in which of them need is a modal verb and in which it isn’t.
