My first year in IU, I had a career perspectives class. There were many speakers but one of them was different from others. That was a speaker from one of those broker firms from New York. Me and my roommate both international students had one opinion – this “guy is so cool”. This tall man was sitting there in a 2k dollar suit in a very different way; he was taking huge amount of space. That was because his level of confidence was over the roof, he was making more than 100K a year and at that point I thought that this is my goal for life. The value of life at that point for me were to get a Mercedes s-class, nice watches, to have a 6-7 digit figure before the coma on my account and drink a glass of 1937 Macallan Glenlivet on rocks and be like that guy successful. I misunderstood the message.
In 2005 I lost 60 000 us dollars in 12 hour long city riots. Life made me work for the government without any risk of my personal funds. I did well there I grew up to become the youngest advisor to the minister of economic development and then when he left his position I moved to the ministry of agriculture.
November 2007 I got married, 2008 I had a kid. Economy was doing better and I had an offer from my dad’s friend to return to business. When I told my boss at the ministry that I need to leave he asked me to go with him to Rome, Italy to participate at the UNs Highest Level Conference on world hunger.
First when we went to the conference I wanted to rent a Mercedes. My boss told me not to. He suggested walking. I thought that it was cheap and he is trying to save some money, but then when we were walking I met the minister of agriculture of Norway, the Minister from Germany and many other civilized countries. Even Prime Minister Berlusconi, President Sapatera would drop their cars at the security zone and walk with others to the conference. The only ones who would come by car would be the leaders with totalitarian regimes. The idea was that it would be very unfair to come to the conference to raise money for poor and at the same time to drive Mercedes and BMW as if it is a party and no one is carrying about the people in hunger. On top of that my country is in hunger, and driving expensive car just shows that there is no perspective for people.
When I asked my boss, the minister, about that question of mine to returning back to business he bought me a drink. He told me that in 6 month he’ll be resigning himself and at the age of 60 and he is planning to go to Turkey to study artificial pollination and that he always wanted his own kettle breed. He suggested me to do what I really like no matter how the business will do. Just change my life as early as I can so there would be less harm to my family.
Now, I live by that suggestion and instead of working on governmental projects I am starting it all over again. This time I will do the job of my life – IT and my goals changed too; now I want to raise my son to be a good man, build a nice house for my wife and plant a tree for earths future.
