Differences between British and American punctuation

Quotation Marks
As a general rule, British usage, as well as South African, favours single quotes for ordinary use, but double quotes are also very common; American, Canadian and New Zealand insists upon double quotes:
(B) Aristotle said that 'A friend to all is a friend to none.'
(A) Aristotle said that "A friend to all is a friend to none."
The same rule applies to enclosing titles in quotes:
(B) He works for the British 'The Guardian'.
(A) He works for the British "The Guardian."
However, this usage has now largely disappeared, and the modern custom is to write the most titles in italics, with the only exception: the names of holy books are usually not written in italics. Thus, we write about the (Holy) Bible and the (Holy) Koran, with no italics.
Another problem with quotation is whether to put other punctuation marks inside or outside the quotation marks. American usage places most other punctuation marks inside a closing quote, regardless of whether they form a part of the quotation. British usage, in contrast, insists that the only punctuation marks which should be placed inside the quotation marks are those that form part of the quotation, but with one exception: British publishers normally ask to put a comma inside closing quotes:
(B) 'First love', remarked Bernard Shaw, 'is only a little foolishness and a lot of curiosity.'
(A) "First love," remarked Bernard Shaw, "is only a little foolishness and a lot of curiosity."
However, be careful with quoting poems:
(Correct) William Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice contains the line 'But love is blind, and lovers cannot see'.
(Wrong) William Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice contains the line 'But love is blind, and lovers cannot see.'
It could be wrong to use American approach here, since the line in question is only the first of two lines making up a complete sentence, and hence does not end in a full stop:
But love is blind, and lovers cannot see
The pretty follies that themselves commit.
However, you may follow your own preferences in this matter, so long as you are consistent.
If you citing a quotation that has another quotation inside, use the internal quotation with other type of quotation marks.
(B) He was saying that, 'Continuous omitting of "sir" is an insult to the teaching staff.'
(A) He was saying that, "Continuous omitting of 'sir' is an insult to the teaching staff."
Punctuating letters
In British English, the greeting is always followed by a comma. In American usage, only a personal letter takes a comma here, while a business letter takes a colon:
(B) Dear Lucius, or Dear Mr Malfoy,
(A) Dear Lucius, but Dear Mr. Malfoy:
In a personal letter you can use any closing you like. However, in Britain, it is traditional to close with Yours sincerely when writing to a named person but Yours faithfully when using the Dear Sir/Madam greeting. American usage prefers Yours sincerely or Sincerely yours for all business letters.
And do not forget that, if you are writing for an American audience, you should follow the American norms!
