Let’s talk about family.

Let’s talk about your family. What is family for you?

No doubt for all of us our family is the most precious thing on earth. We all need love, understanding and support and we are sure to find them in our families. I’d like to tell you a few words about our family.

Our family is not very large. There are 4 of us: father, mother, my sister and I. (3 of us: father, mother and I).

My mother is on the right (wrong) side of 40 (под/за 40), but she looks much younger. She has short dark hair and hazel eyes. (She has fair wavy hair and blue eyes). She works as a nurse in a hospital (a teacher at a secondary school, an engineer at a plant, a book-keeper in a bank, a dressmaker). She is always as busy as a bee because she runs the house and has a lot of work to do at our summer cottage. We all try to help her as much as we can.

My father is a little bit older than my mother. He is in his early (mid-, late) 40-ies, but he doesn’t look his age either. They say that a woman is as old as she looks and a man is as old as he feels and my father looks and feels strong and fit. He is very keen on sport (fishing) and he spends a lot of time on his hobby (especially on jogging (volleyball).) He is really an excellent father, very involved and protective towards us and we love him dearly. My father is a worker at a plant (a teacher at a technical school, a doctor, an engineer, a business-man). He often comes tired from work but he always finds time for us.

My sister is 2 years my senior. She studies at University. She is going to be a teacher/an engineer/an economist/a lawyer. (She works as a shop-assistant at a bookshop).

My sister is 4 years my junior. She is the baby of the family. She is a little bit naughty sometimes, but we all adore her and forgive her everything.

Are there any things that you do with your parents together?

It is not very easy to spend free time with my parents. You see, everyone in our family has a hobby of their own. And our favourite pastimes differ greatly. For example, mother is a home sort. She likes watching TV and knitting. Father is always ready to go fishing, snow or rain. My favourite recreation (развлечение) is listening to music (playing computer games), but unfortunately I’m too pressed for time now and I can’t indulge in my hobby. But there are certainly things we do together. When we have holidays, we do everything together, and my ideas and suggestions are taken into account too. We sometimes go on outings together and we have a very enjoyable time there. Besides when I have a bit of spare time we do household chores together. All this makes our family more united.

What will you ask your British friend about his family?

What can you advise people who want to have a close and happy family?

I think that the best advice will be: do things together and spend as much time as possible together. When children and parents do many things together, when the children’s ideas and suggestions are taken into consideration and when the parents are involved and protective towards their children, we see happy and united families.

Nowadays an average family has one child. From your point of view, how many children should there be in a family?

It is true that very few Belarusian families have more than one or two children. Maybe, one of the reasons for this is that it is pretty difficult for many families to make both ends meet. Everything is expensive including education. (And from my point of view, it is quite reasonable. Personally, I wouldn’t like to have many sisters or brothers. I’d like my parents to devote all their love and attention to me.) But from my point of view, there should be at least 3 children in the family. The children in big families are not selfish, they learn to help one another, they become mature persons sooner.
